Deadbeat Parents

Loser parents

Some people just do not deserve to be considered parents. Just because you managed to have sexual intercourse does not make you a mother or a father. It just makes you an egg or sperm donor.

Today I’d like to tell a story about a family I know. I am not going to mention any names, but this is a 100% true story.

This family is not what we consider to be traditional. Rather, they are what we call a blended family. Both parents had previous marriages and each parent brought a child with them into the new marriage. This particular family is a blended family success story. Although they have been through some difficult times, they love each other and have found a way to make to make it work.

Now, this story is not really about them. The stars of this story are their ex’s. Let’s get right to it.

THE EX-HUSBAND

The ex-husband is not a deadbeat parent in the way that we would  normally define that. He does “pay” his child support. Of course, he really has no choice in the matter, since the court takes it automatically out of his paychecks. All he really does is not quit his job to avoid paying.

No, this man (and I use that word loosely), is a deadbeat of another sort. He is an emotional and psychological deadbeat. Here’s a partial list of how this “father” operates.

  • He has only seen his daughter, now 8-years old, one time in the last two years. The only reason he saw her then was because his mother took his daughter to his house and forced him to see her.
  • He only calls to talk to her about once every four to five months. Even then, he doesn’t really have any interest in actually talking to her. These phones calls always last less than 10 minutes. Seemingly, the only reason he calls is to pump her for information and to make sure the mother knows he has spies watching her every move.
  • At the time of the divorce, he lived less than 1 hour from his daughter. He willingly moved 7 hours away. Even though he rarely saw her when he was close by, the move made it quite obvious that she was not an important part of his life.
  • Even though he doesn’t bother to see his daughter or be a part of her life, she still feels loyalty towards him. He took advantage of that by telling her that she is NOT ALLOWED to call her step-father “Dad”. It is common to hear address her step-father by saying, “Dad……. *pause*…….. I mean (step-father’s first name)” An 8-year old should not have that kind pressure on her.
  • On the rare occasions that he does see her, he doesn’t bother to actually take care of her. A few years ago, after spending just 2 weeks with her father, she had noticeably gained a lot of weight. He just kept shoving food in front of her and letting her eat anything and everything she wanted.
  • He has made a habit of not sending her gifts for her birthday or for Christmas. When she questions him about this, he simply tells her that they must have gotten lost in the mail. A couple years ago, when he actually saw her, her “long lost” Christmas present miraculously showed up.
  • Recently he talked to her on the phone. Without her asking about it, he made sure to tell her that she would not be able to see him this summer because he “has to work”.

THE EX-WIFE

There’s really only one thing you need to know about this woman. She does not have custoday of her child. With the way the court system in this country works, that’s about as bad of an indictment as you can have as a “mother”. Here are some of her highlights.

  • She lost the right to have custody of her son when she decided that getting laid by men other than her husband was more important than taking care of her son. This when he was just 3 months old. This earned her a conviction for child endangerment.
  • Even so, she has managed to convince herself that she is the victim in this scenario. The way she sees it, this was all the husband’s fault and she was basically forced to do what she did.
  • In the years since the divorce she has not bothered to get a job. Therefore, she has never paid a dime of child support. She has instead chosen to leech off the state, by somehow convincing them that she is disabled. She is not.
  • In order to exact some measure of revenge, she falsely accused the step-mother of abusing her son. Despicable, but rather ironic at the same time.
  • At one point, before the divorce was final, she went 18 straight months without seeing her son. She did this in hopes to convince the court that the father was withholding their son from her. It didn’t work.
  • She recently told her now 7-year old son that she couldn’t see him on her allotted weekend, because “something came up”. What was so important that she couldn’t see her son? There was a local carnival going on and she wanted to be able to go without having to drag him around with her.
  • Her son recently revealed to his father that when he is at his mother’s he sleeps at his grandmother’s house, while she goes to her boyfriend’s house. She can’t even bother to be with the son the couple nights a month she has him.
  • When he returns from his mother’s, he always smells like an ashtray and during the summer he is usually covered from head to toe in bug bites. Several times, he has had bad nose bleeds the night after returning. When this happens, he wakes up with his entire body covered in blood. A doctor told the father that this is almost certainly due to the smoke exposure, but nothing can be done because it can’t be proven. When the father tried to talk to the mother about it, she blew it off.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of “parents” out there that are just as bad, or worse. The children would be better off if these people would just go away. For some reason, our courts and our society think that children must have a relationship with their biological parents. Often times, though, all it does is hurt the child.

World Cup? Meh.

It's World Cup time, again.

It’s World Cup time, again.

The World Cup is in full swing. Media outlets across the country are falling all over themselves to cover the USA soccer team. They are declaring things like “World Cup Fever Grips America“. I heard a commentator on TV a couple days ago say that the entire country is “mesmerized” with the US soccer team. Earlier today, I heard a radio sports guy say that on Thursday, when the USA plays Germany, no work will get done in the United States. Really? I have not heard a single person at work, or anywhere else for that matter, talking about the World Cup. I’m just not buying it. Personally, I couldn’t care less about the World Cup or soccer in general. Why? It’s just flat out boring.

I’m not sure I understand the push in this country to try to make people like soccer. I know that people are watching the World Cup. I understand that the game against Portugal had the most US viewers of any soccer game ever. I’m still not buying it. I think this is a national pride thing, plain and simple. I think that once the US team is eliminated, the country as a whole will go back to not caring about soccer for another 4 years.

The entire world loves soccer, except for us. What is wrong with Americans? Why can’t we be obsessed over the game the rest of the world is rabid over? I mean, afterall, soccer is filled with wild, end-to-end action, right? I mean, just watch the video below!

Ummm, well, maybe it’s not so exciting. If you made it through that entire clip without falling asleep, you deserve a medal. Ok, so soccer players are tough and play like gladiators, right?

Hmmm, not so much, I guess. The constant dramatic flopping in soccer is ridiculous and offputting. I mean seriously, if I wanted to watch a bunch of grown men act like whiny wimps, I’d watch a Miami Heat game.

Here’s another thing about soccer I, and most Americans, don’t get. Why can’t anyone see the clock? The time is kept completely at the discretion of the umpire (or ref, or whatever he’s called) and no one else knows when the game will end. Then, out of nowhere, he blows his whistle and the game is over. How stupid is that? Some of the most exciting moments in sports happen at the end of games when the teams are scrambling to close out the game in the waning seconds.

All this being said, I want to be fair to soccer. There are some things about the game I absolutely love. Shoot, I even really like the movie “Goal!”. Here are the good things about soccer, in my opinion.

1. The fans. It’s amazing how passionate soccer fans are. United States sports fans could learn a few things from international soccer fans (minus the more than occasional hooliganism, that is). This is pretty freaking awesome.

2. The announcers. When someone does actually manage to score a goal in soccer, the announcers always go nuts. I love it.

3. The goal celebrations. Soccer celebrations are epic and awesome. The NFL could really take note of this.

4. Watching little kids play. Pee Wee soccer is hilarious.

5. Brandi Chastain. This one pretty much speaks for itself.

Well, that’s pretty much it. The only redeeming qualities of soccer, in my opinion. The rest of it is about as interesting as watching grass grow. I do think the sport has a lot of potential.

How would I fix soccer? Here’s a quick 9-step plan.

  1. Make the field smaller, much smaller.
  2. Reduce the number of players on the field for each team to 6.
  3. Let the teams change players while the action is going on.
  4. Put walls around the field. Then the only way the ball can be out of bounds is if it goes over the wall.
  5. Cover the field with ice.
  6. Give the players skates so they can move faster.
  7. Make the ball a lot smaller and flatten it.
  8. Let the players use sticks, instead of their feet, to move the ball around.
  9. Allow the players to run each other into the walls and knock each other off their feet.

You know, something like this. This is the kind of soccer I can get exicted about.

Too Excited

John Groce

A man on a mission

I’m an Illinois Fighting Illini fan. As such, I should never get too terribly excited about recruiting. Right now I just can’t help it, though. Illinois head coach John Groce, and his team of assistants, is making a huge mark in the recruiting world. He is doing things that we just haven’t seen out of former Illini coaches. Robert at A Lion Eye (my favorite blog) wrote a nice post on this today.

The Illini coaching staff is in the mix for several highly rated out-of-state players (and one Chicago kid). Historically, Illinois does not succeed in obtaining top notch non-Illinoisans. It looks like that may be changing soon, though.

Here are a few of the players that the Illini are currently in good standing with:

CARLTON BRAGG

Bragg (PF), from Ohio, is the best of them all. This kid is a stud. Just watch the video! Bragg will likely only spend one year in college before becoming an NBA lottery pick. On Wednesday, CBS Sports recruiting analyst Jeff Borzello created a stir among Illini fans with his tweet which stated, “Five-star forward Carlton Bragg said he will narrow his list in September. Illinois, Kentucky and Kansas the only guarantees to make it.” Oh my. Illinois fans are not used to being mentioned in the same breath as Kentucky. At this point it appears that the Illini are in Bragg’s top 3 and there are rumblings that Illinois may be his current favorite.

ELIJAH THOMAS

Thomas (C), from Texas, represents the center the Illini desperately need in the 2015 class. He is a big, strong kid who has light feet and an array of offensive moves which makes him an elite inside scorer. Officially, Thomas only has a Top 10 list of schools he is considering. Illinois is on that list and all indications are that the Illini are near the top of his list. He interacts with Illini fans constantly via social media and is frequently seen sporting Illini gear.

JALEN BRUNSON

Brunson (PG), from Chicago, has been the apple of the Illini fan’s eye for some time now. The intense interest in him reached a fever pitch after Brunson set a state record by scoring 56 of his team’s 68 points in a state semi-final loss to Whitney Young (the best team in the state) and Duke commit Jahlil Okafor. Brunson is not the most athletic guard around, but he more than makes up for it with his incredible shooting ability, superb handles, great body control and high basketball IQ. He recently visited the Illinois campus and appears to have Illinois in his current Top 5.

JAWUN EVANS

Evans (PG), from Texas, has been exploding onto the national scene recently. There is an ongoing debate among Illini fans as to whether or not we would rather have Brunson or Evans (seriously, we’ll throw a party for either one). While Brunson is more of a scorer, Evans is a high-level facilitator. He is certainly capable of scoring when needed, but where he really excels is setting up his teammates. He is also a tenacious defender. It is thought that the Illini are currently in Evans’ Top 3.

DORAL MOORE

Moore (C), from Georgia, is an uber-athletic 7’1″ skyscraper. I’ll be honest, most Illini fans have not taken Moore very seriously. There has been virutally no news and very little chatter in recruiting circles linking Moore to Illinois. Then today, came some shocking news. First, came reports that he intends to visit the Illinios campus. That was followed by this tweet from AllMetroHoops saying, “Doral Moore says his list down to UK, Ohio State, Florida, Wake and Illinois “. Illini fans were stunned, and extremely excited, to learn this.

Other names that have been associated with the Illini include Jimmy Whitt (MO), Shake Milton (OK), Caleb Swanigan (IN), Jalen Coleman (IN), Justin Robinson (MD), Josh Sharma (MA) and Diamond Stone (WI).

Historically, Illinois coaches just don’t recruit out-of-state like this. I’m an Illini fan and as such I should know better than to get excited about this. Our fanbase has experienced gut punch after gut punch for years. I can’t help it though, I’m chugging the orange Kool-Aid.

If Illinois could get a commit from just one of the five players I highlighted, it would set off an epic celebration. In Groce We Trust.

Bad Blogger

I’ve been bad

I’ve been a bad blogger. My last post was over 10 months ago. I’m sure that my two loyal readers have been quite disappointed. I do have a good excuse, though. I started a new job last September and have relocated my family, bought a house, learned the new job and just generally been extremely busy. I hope to post a little more consistently from here on out.

Divided We Fall

Image

Our image of ourselves

United we stand, divided we fall. We’ve all heard this phrase. According to the Smithsonian Institute, the origin is from a 1768 song, The Liberty Song by John Dickinson. We normally hear this phrase in the United States during times of turmoil. We reference it when the country is at war. It was all over the place after the 9/11 attacks. In this post, though, I’m going to look at it from another angle.

I think this phrase does an excellent job of describing what is going on in our country today. The politicians have successfully divided the citizenry of this country. How have they done that? By getting us to focus on secondary issues that are not as important as the ones we should be paying attention to.

Think about it for a second. What issues are constantly pounded into our heads by our politicians and the media? Gun control, abortion, gay marriage, drugs, immigration, healthcare…… the list goes on and on. Now I’m not saying that these issues are not important, because they are. I’m saying that they are secondary issues behind the one thing that everyone should really be concentrating on, government corruption.

Why are we not paying attention to this issue? Misdirection by the politicians. Misdirection is a word you hear often in football, when an offense uses deception to get the defense going in one direction, only to have the ball end up going in the other direction. The best example I can think of this is in the video below. Steven Bono’s 76-yard touchdown run in 1995. As you watch this video, think of the government as the Chiefs (red shirts) and the general population of the United States as the Cardinals (white shirts).

That was amazing. On the football field it’s a beautiful thing, in the political arena it’s ugly and disastrous. The politicians have us bickering about secondary issues, while they run around destroying the country.

Image

Our current political system

What corruption am I talking about? The money that has infiltrated our system. Make no mistake about it, the citizens no longer get to choose who our “leaders” are. No, they are chosen by special interest groups. They are chosen by the money.

Corporations pour money into the political system. Once a politician receives a massive check, what do you think happens? They become beholden to the writer of that check. To make matters worse, it is impossible to be successful in our political system without having the big money backers.

Republicans and Democrats have a stranglehold on this country. Why? Money. In addition to that, they have placed obstacle after obstacle in the way of anyone who wants to challenge the status quo. Third party and independent candidates spend so much time and effort just trying to get on the ballot that there is nothing left to campaign with. As far as being part of the debates? Pfffft, forget about it.

Why are the Republicans and Democrats allowing such a corrupt system to continue? Because of power. They want to control us and they do everything they can to exercise that control.

So what can be done about all this? Well, the people of the United States are going to have to stand up with a united voice and take control of the system again. We have to put aside our petty differences and work together. Pro-life and pro-choice, pro-gay marriage and anti-gay marriage, liberals, conservatives and libertarians, Tea Party supporters and Occupy Wall Street supporters. We have to join forces and fight against our corrupt politicians.

The politicians will do everything they can to keep us fighting against each other. Our great country is in big trouble. The only way we can get back on track is to take the country back from the corrupt politicians. Sadly, I don’t see this happening.

Our reality

Divide and conquer. Divided we fall.

Full Disclosure: I was inspired to write this blog post after listening to a couple of podcasts by Dan Carlin. As I listened to these podcasts, I became increasingly ashamed of myself for continuing to fight the petty fights. I strongly urge you to give them a listen. He discusses this issue much more eloquently that I ever could. I stole some of what I wrote from him.

The Immigration Debate

Image

I agree.

With the debate on immigration currently going on in Congress, I thought this would be a good time to weigh in on it. The central issue here is twofold. First, what do we do with all the illegal immigrants currently in the country? Secondly, what do we do with the southern border to Mexico?

Current Illegal Immigrants

All too often, you only hear of two options for dealing with those people who have illegally crossed our borders. One of those options is amnesty and the other one is deportation. I do not like either of these options.

Offering wholesale amnesty is completely unfair to all those people who are currently waiting their turn, legally, for United States citizenship. I don’t think we can completely ignore the fact that many people have chosen to ignore the laws of our country.

On the other hand, the deportation option is just insane. There is no way that we can deport every single person who has crossed the border illegally. It’s just not practical. The other problem with deportation is the cost involved. It would likely cost us billions, which is not something our country can afford when we are already approaching $17 trillion in national debt.

So, what do we do? I prefer a middle of the road option. This is my plan for dealing with the illegal immigrants currently in the country.

1. Give instant citizenship to all children who were brought here by their parents. This is a one time thing and is only effective for families who are currently already in the United States. It is not the fault of these children that they were brought here. Their parents made that decision, not them. Do not punish the children. If they have already been living and going to school here, then let them stay and make them citizens.

2. All adults who are here illegally will be forced to pay back taxes. They will be allowed to apply for citizenship through the normal channels. They will be allowed to stay and work in the US, but they will have to pay taxes. Once they have gone through the normal citizenship process and paid all back taxes, they will be awarded their citizenship. They will not be eligible for public aid during the waiting period.

3. Those illegal immigrants already here will not be forced to apply for citizenship. They will not be deported for choosing not to apply. They will be allowed to stay and work, but they will be required to pay taxes (including any back taxes). They will not be eligible for public aid.

4. The first two guidelines will only be valid for those who have been living in the United States already and have done so in a civil manner. Anyone with a violent criminal record will not be eligible for this program. Anyone who chooses not to pay taxes will be immediately deported.

Mexican Border

This one is really simple. Get rid of all the ridiculous border security. Don’t even think about putting up a fence. Make it an open border. Why should we stop anyone from coming to the United States who simply wants to better themselves and their families? We should allow them to come here and work without having to go through the citizenship process. They won’t be given citizenship unless they apply through the normal channels, but they can live and work here. They will be required to pay taxes and will not be eligible for public aid. Anyone who commits a violent crime will no longer be allowed to stay here.

Good Luck, Brandon!

As Brandon Paul begins to chase his NBA dream, I wanted to write a few words about him. BP3 is one of my favorite Illini players ever.

Image

See the video below!

I was hoping to be writing this post after seeing Brandon get selected in last night’s NBA draft. Unfortunately, that was not mean to be as he went undrafted. There is some good news, though. Earlier today he was signed to the Minnesota Timberwolves summer league team.

BP3’s Illini career was a real roller coaster ride. Brandon, and the Illini, visited incredible highs (win over #1 Indiana last year) and deep, dark valleys (losing 12 of the last 14 games in the 2011-12 season, to miss the NCAA tourney). Individually, BP3 went through many peaks and valleys. He started his Illini career by scoring 42 points in the first two games of his freshman year. Then, during his senior year, he was pulled from the starting lineup for playing poor defense.

Now don’t get me wrong. Brandon Paul is a very good basketball player. He is only the second player in Illini history to amass 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 100 steals in his career. He was a 2-time member of the All-Big Ten team. His senior year he finished third in the Big Ten in scoring at 16.6 points per game. He was twice named the National Player of the Week. He was the MVP of the 2012 Maui Invitational. The only issue Brandon had was his wild inconsistency. He tended to just disappear for long stretches.

Image

The smile Illini fans got to know so well.

Why do I like such an inconsistent player so much? Because of his attitude, that’s why. Even when Brandon went through tough times, you never heard about him complaining. He always wore a smile on his face, a smile that was infectious. He was constantly pranking teammates, and sometimes even players on the football team. His #joetales tweets, about teammate Joe Bertrand, were very popular with the Illini fanbase.

The other great thing about Brandon is that, by all accounts, he is an even better person than he is a basketball player. He was a 3-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. After his senior season, he was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor which only 24 of the Big Ten’s 8,200 athletes received. According to the Big Ten website, Brandon “regularly visits local schools and the pediatric ward at Urbana’s Carle Foundation Hospital.”

Illini fans will sorely miss seeing Brandon Paul wear the Illini jersey. I expect we will one day see his number 3 hanging from the Assembly Hall, make that State Farm Center, rafters. I hope we will one day see him wearing the Timberwolves jersey in real NBA games.

I am going to conclude this post by counting down my five favorite Brandon Paul memories.

#5. BP3 destroys Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe

4. Brandon “Superman” Paul goes off for 35 at Gonzaga (this is not actually a Brandon Paul video, but you get to see plenty of him in it)

3. Buzzer beater against Minnesota in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament

2. SIU’s Carlton Faye gets put on a poster

1. BP3 puts on a show against Ohio St.

Supreme Court Gay Marriage Ruling

Image

I bet these guys are happy today.

My first real post and it’s already going to be a controversial one.

Today was a historical day for our country. No matter which side of the gay marriage fence you sit on, you have to admit that much. It will be really interesting to see what happens in state governments over the next several years.

In my opinion, we have taken a huge step forward in the civil rights arena. There is simply no logical reason why gay adults should not be allowed to marry each other. I understand that much of the opposition is looking at this from a religious viewpoint. Here’s the thing though…. You don’t get to force your religious beliefs down the throats of everyone else. Religious beliefs have no place in molding the laws of our nation, period.

That actually brings me to another point. As far as I’m concerned, the biggest issue surrounding marriage legality in the United States (aside from the clashes that are sure to take place in states all over the country) is that fact that government is even involved in marriage in the first place. Can someone please explain to me why the hell marriage is government regulated in the first place? What business does government have being involved in marriage at all? None, really.

The only reason government has anything to do with marriage, and many other similar areas, is to have yet another area to exercise control over us. Here’s what we need to do. Take marriage out of the hands of government completely. Remove all tax benefits for married people. Why should married people be taxed at a lower rate anyway? Everyone should be taxed at the same rate. Really, we should implement the fair tax, but that’s a whole different post.

So my take on today’s event in the SCOTUS is that it’s a big win for civil rights. On the other hand, it didn’t help anything in the fight for smaller government. All in all, I’ll take it. It’s a step in the right direction.

Testing The Waters

This is my first foray into blogging. This blog has no real topic, just whatever I feel like writing about. You can likely expect a lot of sports, with a good dose of politics thrown in. Please feel free to leave any comments of suggestions you may have for me.
